The University of Mobile announced this week that Mike Doig will take the helm of its men’s basketball program, naming the veteran coach as the new head coach of the program.
Doig arrives with more than 30 years of experience across collegiate athletics, having served in a variety of roles at institutions including Liberty University, St. Catharine College and Indiana University before his most recent stint as an assistant at Pepperdine University.
During his two seasons with the Waves, Doig helped the team secure its first West Coast Conference semifinal appearance in four years, a milestone that underscored his ability to elevate program performance.
A Coach Aligned with a Shared Vision
University President Charles Smith praised the hire, stating that Doig’s coaching talent and leadership perfectly align with the university’s mission of developing student‑athletes who excel both on the court and as leaders in their communities.
Smith emphasized that the appointment reflects the university’s commitment to competitive athletics rooted in its Baptist heritage, and expressed confidence that Doig will continue the program’s upward trajectory.
In his remarks, Doig highlighted the importance of integrating athletic success with academic and spiritual growth, noting that the university’s values resonated strongly with his own coaching philosophy.
He added that the program will focus on recruiting student‑athletes who are prepared to compete at a high level while embracing the broader educational experience offered by the Mobile campus.
The announcement comes as the university looks to build on recent improvements in its basketball facilities and expand its recruiting footprint throughout the Southeast.
