Mike Erwin Takes the Reins of Angelo State Women’s Soccer

A native of New Mexico and member of the Muscogee Creek Nation brings a winning pedigree to the Belles

Angelo State University announced Monday that Mike Erwin will take the helm of its women's soccer program, ushering in a new chapter for the Belles. The announcement comes as the program prepares for its 2026 campaign, opening against Metro State Denver on August 27 at 1 p.m.

A Coach With Deep Roots and Proven Success

Erwin, a native of New Mexico and an enrolled member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, grew up playing club soccer in Albuquerque before starring at Chandler‑Gilbert Community College in Arizona. He later turned professional in the semi‑pro ranks, suiting up for the Albuquerque Asylum and Banat Storm while completing a bachelor's degree in political science and philosophy at the University of New Mexico.

His coaching journey began at St. Mary's University, where he spent six seasons as associate head coach. During that tenure the Rattlers posted a 55‑37‑17 record, captured the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament each year, and earned NCAA tournament selections in 2022 and 2023.

Erwin succeeds Harold Munoz, who held the position briefly before moving to Mercer University. He inherits a program that has been shaped for nearly two decades by Travis McCorckle, who guided the Belles through an 18‑year stretch before parting ways with the school.

The new coaching staff is already looking ahead to the 2026 schedule, with the season opener slated for August 27 against Metro State Denver. Executives say Erwin's blend of playing experience, cultural heritage, and tactical acumen positions the Belles for a competitive future.
