The Philadelphia 76ers have named former Cleveland Cavaliers executive Mike Gansey as their new president of basketball operations, filling the vacancy left by Daryl Morey, who was dismissed earlier this month.
Gansey, who joined the Cavaliers’ front office in 2011 and was promoted to general manager in 2022, built a reputation for turning a rebuilding franchise into a consistent playoff contender. Under his stewardship, the Cavaliers captured four playoff appearances in four seasons and earned the G League Executive of the Year award in 2017.
A New Direction for Philadelphia
The Sixers’ recent campaign ended with a 24‑58 record, a tally that reflects the toll of injuries to star big man Joel Embiid and veteran forward Paul George. Despite the setback, the club still boasts emerging talents such as Tyrese Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecomb, who offer a glimpse of future upside.
Gansey will inherit a roster that is both promising and fragile. He is expected to work closely with the front office’s existing personnel, including Koby Altman, who helped guide the Cavaliers to multiple series wins, and to leverage the organization’s deep ties with affiliates like the Canton Charge.
League observers see the appointment as a signal that Philadelphia is intent on accelerating its rebuild. By bringing in a proven executive with a track record of strategic drafting and salary‑cap maneuvering, the 76ers hope to restore competitiveness and return to the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference.
