Mike Gansey is set to become the new president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, taking over from Daryl Morey after the franchise was swept by the New York Knicks in the recent playoffs.
The front office reshuffle was overseen by Bob Myers, who led the search process for the Sixers' top job. With the team’s recent disappointment, ownership decided a change was needed to steer the roster toward a deeper playoff run.
Gansey's path to the Sixers' front office is anything but ordinary. A standout at St. Bonaventure and later at West Virginia, he entered the 2006 NBA draft only to contract a severe MRSA infection that threatened his playing career. After recovering, he turned to professional basketball abroad, spending stints in Italy, Germany and China before returning to the United States.
His front‑office ascent began in 2011 when he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers' staff. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning G League executive of the year in 2017 and being promoted to general manager in 2022. Under his leadership the Cavaliers qualified for the playoffs every season, a consistency that caught the eye of Philadelphia's ownership group.
A new era for Philadelphia
Gansey and former NBA point guard Jameer Nelson were identified as the leading candidates during the Sixers' recruitment drive. Both bring a blend of playing experience and front‑office acumen, but Gansey's track record of steady playoff appearances and his ability to navigate the league's business side appear to have sealed the deal.
The appointment signals a new direction for a franchise that has been eager to translate its star‑laden roster into deeper playoff runs. With Bob Myers guiding the transition, the Sixers hope Gansey's analytical approach and relationship‑building skills will help them finally break through the Eastern Conference.
