Veteran coach Mike Haviland joins Ontario Reign
The Ontario Reign have named Mike Haviland as their newest assistant coach, a move that underscores the club’s intent to bolster its bench with proven expertise.
At 58, Haviland arrives with more than two decades of coaching experience across both the NHL and the American Hockey League, bringing a track record that includes championship pedigree and developmental success.
His most recent stint was with the Cleveland Monsters, the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he served as associate coach from 2022 through 2024, helping shape a competitive roster during a pivotal period.
Prior to that, Haviland held the head coaching reins for the Norfolk Admirals, the Rockford IceHogs and the Hershey Bears, each of which benefitted from his strategic acumen and player development focus.
His coaching excellence was recognized in 2006‑07 when he captured the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award, honoring him as the AHL’s outstanding coach for that season.
Haviland also contributed to the Chicago Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup triumph in 2010, serving as an assistant coach for four seasons and playing a role in the team’s power‑play strategies.
His arrival in Ontario is expected to add depth to the Reign’s coaching staff, offering mentorship to younger assistants and contributing to the club’s tactical evolution as it aims for a deeper playoff run.
