Mike Larkin, who has served as Director of Basketball Operations for Rutgers Basketball for the past three seasons, announced that he will join Stonehill College as an assistant coach, marking the end of a seven‑year tenure with the Scarlet Knights.
Larkin’s journey at Rutgers began in 2014 when he arrived as a graduate assistant at Rutgers‑Newark, later moving to St. Michael’s College where he climbed the ranks to associate head coach before returning to the university system as a special assistant.
In the 2021‑22 season he was promoted to director of basketball operations, a role in which he oversaw recruitment, compliance and day‑to‑day program logistics, and he earned a salary of $123,600 for the 2025‑26 campaign.
A Move That Signals Change
The transition comes as Stonehill, a member of the Northeast Conference, seeks to bolster its coaching staff ahead of the upcoming season, and Larkin’s experience in program development is expected to add depth to the team’s offensive schemes.
Jon Rothstein, a prominent college basketball analyst, first broke the story on social media, noting that Larkin’s departure reflects a broader trend of experienced staff seeking new challenges beyond the Power Five landscape.
Rutgers will now look to fill the vacancy internally or externally, a decision that could shape the next phase of its rebuilding efforts after a season that ended with mixed results in the Big Ten.
