A Hall of Fame nod for a coaching pioneer
Mike Leach, the architect of the Air Raid offense, has been named among the nominees for the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame class, a recognition that comes despite his passing in 2022.
The National Football Foundation adjusted its induction standards, lowering the required career winning percentage to .595, which made Leach’s 158‑107 record across Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State eligible for consideration.
A legacy defined by innovation and upsets
Leach’s teams set dozens of scoring and passing marks, and he compiled an impressive 18 victories over Top 25 opponents while his squads were unranked, underscoring his knack for pulling upsets and pioneering an aggressive, wide‑open style.
His career, spanning 21 seasons, is marked by record‑breaking performances and a reputation for pushing the boundaries of college football strategy.
A crowded field of contenders
The ballot, released in early January, also features veteran FBS coaches such as Larry Coker, Dennis Franchione, Ralph Friedgen, Darryl Rogers, Jackie Sherrill and Tommy Tuberville, alongside Heisman Trophy winners Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III.
Each candidate must pass a screening that verifies adherence to eligibility rules before a vote is taken by members of the NFF and the Football Writers Association of America, ensuring that the final class reflects both statistical achievement and lasting impact on the sport.
