Mike Luera Takes the Helm of El Dorado High School Boys Basketball

Former assistant coach transitions to head coach after Justin Avalos' move to Eastlake

A New Era for El Dorado Basketball

Mike Luera, a longtime assistant at El Dorado High School, has been elevated to head coach of the boys basketball program, taking over from Justin Avalos, who recently accepted a similar position at Eastlake High School.

El Dorado, a Class 5A program competing in District 2‑5A, has seen its fortunes rise over the past three seasons, climbing from six wins to a 16‑win campaign and then to a 21‑win season that earned a spot in the Texas UIL playoffs. Avalos, who guided the team through that stretch, credited Luera’s contributions as instrumental to the turnaround.

Luera’s connection to the school runs deep. He spent nearly six years on the staff, initially serving under former coach Raul Lopez before Avalos took the helm. A 2004 graduate of nearby Americas High School, Luera began his coaching career at the middle‑school level before moving up to the high‑school ranks.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Luera said he is eager to build on the progress made and to continue developing the program that has become a fixture in the regional basketball landscape.

Avalos, in his farewell remarks, described Luera as “a great coach who has earned this opportunity,” emphasizing confidence in the team’s future under his leadership.
