Mike Martin, who steered Brown’s men’s basketball program for the past 13 years, announced that he will depart the university to join the coaching staff at the University of Michigan. His departure comes as the program prepares for a new chapter under the guidance of Mike Boynton, who recently assembled a new roster of assistants.
A Legacy of Growth
Martin retires as the winningest coach in Brown history, having compiled 171 victories during his tenure. He was named head coach in 2012 at the age of 29 and quickly turned the Bears into a competitive force within the Ivy League.
Under his leadership the team achieved a 20‑win season, captured its first-ever postseason victory over Alabama‑Birmingham, and reached the Ivy League Championship Game in the 2023‑24 campaign. The Bears also closed the regular season with six straight wins, underscoring the program’s upward trajectory.
Samuel M. Mencoff, vice president for Athletics and Recreation at Brown, described Martin’s exit as a "bittersweet moment," acknowledging the deep relationships Martin forged with players, staff, alumni and the broader community.
Martin expressed gratitude for his time at Brown, highlighting the meaningful connections he built and the collective achievements that defined his tenure. He looks forward to the next phase of his career at the University of Michigan, where he will contribute to a staff that includes his former player, Mike Boynton.
