Mike Martin, the former head coach of Brown University, has been announced as an assistant coach on Michigan’s basketball staff, joining new head coach Mike Boynton.

Martin spent 14 seasons at Brown, compiling a 171‑win record and earning Ivy League Coach of the Year honors in 2019. Under his leadership the Bears advanced to the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational, showcasing his ability to develop talent and orchestrate competitive play.
Boynton, who previously steered Oklahoma State from 2017 to 2024 and has been active in college basketball since 2004, takes the reins at Michigan after the program captured the national championship last season. He emphasized the need for a seasoned staff to sustain the team’s momentum and meet the lofty expectations that accompany a defending champion.
The hiring of Martin is viewed as a calculated move to blend Ivy League acumen with the Wolverines’ championship pedigree. Both coaches expressed optimism that Martin’s experience will help the program maintain its elite status while pursuing another title run.
