Mike Martin Leaves Brown for Michigan After 14-Year Tenure
Mike Martin, who spent fourteen years at the helm of Brown University’s men’s basketball program, has announced his departure for a similar role at the University of Michigan.
The transition comes after Martin’s tenure that began in 2012 when he was just 29, making him the fourth‑youngest head coach in Division I at the time.
During his time in Providence, Martin compiled 171 victories, the most in Brown’s history, and guided the Bears to four First Team All‑Ivy League selections and five Ivy League Defensive Players of the Year.
His impact was underscored in 2018‑19 when he earned Ivy League Coach of the Year honors after leading the team to its first 20‑win season and a postseason victory over Alabama‑Birmingham.
The following season, Martin steered Brown to the Ivy League Championship Game, defeating Princeton in the semifinals before a hard‑fought loss in the final.
Beyond the win column, Martin’s influence reached back to his playing days, when he was part of some of the program’s most successful classes, posting a 63‑45 record from 2000‑04 and helping the class of 2004 set a school‑record Ivy League mark.
Interim Leadership and Search Process
Associate Head Coach Tyson Wheeler will serve as interim leader while Brown launches a national search, a process that will be aided by Parker Executive Search.
M. Grace Calhoun, who is listed among the university’s staff, is expected to play a key role in overseeing the transition as the administration works toward naming a permanent successor.
