A Dynamic Partnership in the SEC
Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley arrived on campus as the 2024 class’s most celebrated recruits, but it was their relentless work ethic and mutual trust that transformed them into the Volunteers’ most potent weapon.
Last season they averaged 15.3 yards per catch, with Matthews pacing the SEC at 68 receptions and Staley earning Freshman of the Year honors after surpassing 800 yards and scoring four touchdowns.
Their bond extends beyond the field; the pair routinely challenge each other, offering blunt feedback that has sharpened their routes and deepened the team’s chemistry under Coach Josh Heupel.
Looking ahead to 2026, both players stress completeness over statistics, aiming to be the conference’s top receivers while joking about battling for the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Their self‑less approach, praised by Coach Pope, signals a promising future for Tennessee’s passing attack.
