A New Chapter for Eastern Michigan Baseball
Mike Ott, a veteran coach celebrated for turning Kalamazoo College’s baseball program into a national contender, has accepted the position of head baseball coach at Eastern Michigan University. The announcement, made public on Tuesday, marks a strategic move for the Eagles as they seek to elevate their program within the Mid‑American conference.
Ott’s 14‑year tenure at Kalamazoo was defined by a string of milestones: MIAA regular‑season championships in 2023 and 2024, the program’s first NCAA Regional appearances, and a historic 2022 NCAA Tournament victory that ended a long‑standing drought for the school. His career record stands at 316‑233‑1, making him the winningest coach in the school’s history.
Building on a Championship Legacy
Beyond wins, Ott cultivated a culture of academic excellence, guiding his teams to earn the MIAA Team GPA Award nine times and producing multiple All‑Region and All‑American players. His commitment to developing both athletes and scholars has earned him the 2023 D3baseball.com Region 7 Coach of the Year honor.
Prior to Kalamazoo, Ott honed his leadership at Holland Christian High School, where he led the team to several league titles, further underscoring his ability to build winning programs from the ground up.
Expectations for the Upcoming Season
Scott Wetherbee, the university’s athletic director, praised Ott’s blend of competitive drive and mentorship, stating that his arrival aligns with the department’s long‑term vision for baseball. Ryar Rinehart, a senior player who has been a vocal supporter of the program, echoed the sentiment, highlighting Ott’s reputation for fostering growth on and off the field.
