Mike Rhoades Bolsters Penn State Basketball Staff with Dwayne Stephens

The new assistant brings a decade of Michigan State experience and a familial tie to the program.

Penn State’s men’s basketball program has announced a significant addition to its coaching staff, as Dwayne Stephens will join head coach Mike Rhoades for the upcoming 2026‑27 season as an assistant coach.

A Familiar Face Returns to the Big Ten

Stephens spent a decade at Michigan State under Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo, rising to associate head coach, and most recently led Western Michigan to back‑to‑back MAC Tournament appearances. His brother Jarrett Stephens, a former Nittany Lion who played from 1995‑96 to 1999‑2000, adds a personal connection to the program.

The hire comes as Rhoades works to rebuild a roster that lost nine players to the transfer portal, including top scorers Freddie Dilione V and Kayden Mingo.

Rebuilding Through the Transfer Portal

Rhoades has secured commitments from Central Connecticut point guard Jay Rodgers, Alabama Hunstville shooting guard Thomas Allard, Davidson shooting guard Roberts Blums, and Miami (Ohio) guard Brant Byers, aiming to inject fresh talent and depth.

With a blend of seasoned coaching experience and fresh talent, the Nittany Lions hope to return to competitiveness in the Big Ten and contend for postseason play.
