Mike Rotman, an Emmy‑nominated writer and producer who grew up in Windsor, Connecticut, first heard about the Women’s Pro Baseball League a year ago and chose to invest.
His nomination for a Primetime Emmy in 1997 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program recognized his work on ‘Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher’, linking his media career to the world of sports.
Outside of television, Rotman owns Rustic Retreats of Big Bear, a vacation‑rental company in Big Bear Lake, California, and has turned his attention to the nascent WPBL.
A Pipeline for the Next Generation
The league’s inaugural season will open with games at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, where the first competitive matchups will take place on a Saturday and Sunday.
Rotman says women’s sports are trending upward and highlights the athleticism and dedication of WPBL players as evidence of the league’s quality.
He envisions the circuit eventually reaching Connecticut, possibly playing at Dunkin’ Park, and sees the league as a pathway for women to enter professional baseball — a route that has been closed for nearly seven decades.
In the long run, Rotman hopes to own a professional sports franchise, a goal that includes the nostalgic ambition of reviving the Hartford Whalers.
Beyond business, he says the league’s purpose is to inspire young female athletes, showing them that a career in baseball is attainable from Little League to the pros.
