Mike Wells, a Mount Vernon native with three decades of basketball experience, has rejoined Ohio State as an assistant coach, bringing a résumé that stretches from the hardwood of the NBA to the sidelines of international competition.
Wells graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1988 before playing at Mount Vernon Nazarene University under coach Scott Flemming, a formative period that sparked his lifelong love for the game.
From NBA Front Offices to Australian Shores
After an internship with the Houston Rockets in 1999, Wells climbed the NBA ladder, serving as a scout for Team USA from 1998 to 2003 and later heading the Adelaide 36ers in Australia, his first head‑coaching appointment outside the league.
His tenure in the NBA includes stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, and Utah Jazz, where he contributed to championship‑contending teams and mentored stars such as Donovan Mitchell and worked closely with Kobe Bryant during the legend’s final peak.
A Homecoming With Purpose
Now back in Ohio, Wells joins Jake Diebler’s staff, a partnership that Diebler says reflects a desire to push the program beyond traditional assistant roles and to infuse the roster with NBA‑level insight.
Wells says his motivation is simple: to help young Buckeyes navigate the path to the professional ranks while honoring the state that shaped his own basketball journey.
His story underscores how a coach can bridge college basketball’s amateur ethos with the global, commercialized world of the NBA, offering players a unique perspective on preparation, scouting, and professional development.
