Mikko Koivu Joins St. Louis Blues as European Development Consultant

Former NHL captain brings decades of experience to the franchise's player development efforts

The St. Louis Blues announced this week that Mikko Koivu will serve as their European development consultant, a role that places the former NHL captain at the heart of the franchise’s outreach to European prospects.

A Strategic Addition to the Development Staff

Koivu’s 16‑year NHL journey, most of it spent with the Minnesota Wild, saw him accumulate 711 points in 1,035 regular‑season games and 28 points in 59 playoff contests, while also captaining the team for 11 seasons.

A native of Turku, Finland, Koivu’s international résumé includes an Olympic silver medal from 2006, a bronze from 2010 and a gold at the 2011 World Championship, as well as additional medals at subsequent tournaments.

After a brief stint with the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2020‑21 season, Koivu stepped away from playing to focus on coaching and player development with TPS in the SM‑Liiga, where he honed the skills that now will be directed toward the Blues’ European pipeline.

General manager Doug Armstrong praised the appointment, saying Koivu’s deep connections across Scandinavia and his proven leadership make him uniquely qualified to guide the next generation of European talent through the organization’s development department.

A New Chapter for the Blues

The move reflects the Blues’ commitment to expanding its scouting and developmental reach in Europe, a region that has produced several standout players over the past two decades. By leveraging Koivu’s playing experience and coaching background, the club hopes to streamline the transition for European draftees entering the NHL.

Koivu himself expressed enthusiasm about the new role, noting that he looks forward to helping young players navigate both the sport and the cultural shift of moving to North America.
