A Shocking Commitment
Milan Momcilovic, the Iowa State star forward who averaged 16.9 points per game last season, stunned onlookers by signing with the University of Kentucky rather than staying in the Cardinals' fold. His decision marks a rare instance of a top‑rated prospect flipping from a local powerhouse to a rival program.
Momcilovic arrived at Iowa State as one of the nation's most lethal shooters, hitting 48.7 percent from beyond the arc and leading Division I with 136 made threes. He shot 50.6 percent from the field, adding 3.1 rebounds and a steady 1.0 assist per game, numbers that made him a coveted asset for programs across the country.
Louisville, despite missing out on the sharpshooter, remains optimistic. The Cardinals have assembled a 2026‑27 roster that includes six incoming transfers, headlined by Kansas forward Flory Bidunga. Alongside Bidunga, the team welcomes Jackson Shelstad, Alvaro Folgueiras, Karter Knox, De'Shayne Montgomery and Gabe Dynes, each bringing a mix of experience and upside.
Building Around Fresh Talent
The program also benefits from a high‑school recruiting class that features five‑star center Obinna Ekezie Jr. and four‑star forward Boyuan Zhang. Both prospects are expected to contribute immediately, giving the Cardinals a blend of size, skill and versatility. In addition, veterans Adrian Wooley and London Johnson will return, providing continuity and leadership.
The Cardinals' recent on‑court success adds another layer of optimism. After climbing as high as No. 6 in the national rankings, Louisville finished the season at 24‑11, captured its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2017 and pushed Michigan State to the brink before bowing out in the second round.
Looking Ahead
With a blend of seasoned transfers, promising newcomers and returning stalwarts, Louisville aims to reassert itself among the nation's elite. The coaching staff, led by Pat Kelsey, believes the incoming talent can close the gap left by Momcilovic's departure and propel the team back into the top tier for the upcoming campaign.
