Minersville High School readies for 2026 football campaign

Quarterback transition, conditioning drills and rival matchups set the stage for a competitive season

After a season that saw several star players depart, Minersville High School is using the offseason to rebuild and refine its roster. Coach Justin Frantz has been on the field daily, watching every drill and measuring each athlete’s physical limits as the team prepares for the upcoming 2026 campaign.

Quarterback overhaul

Derek Derenzo, who previously lined up as a running back, has taken on the quarterback role, stepping into the spot vacated by Dante Carr. Carr is now heading to the University of Central Florida for his freshman year, leaving a significant void that Derenzo is eager to fill.

John Lutsky is also undergoing a position change, training to become the new running back. His focus is on improving his up‑field running technique so he can contribute more effectively in the ground game.

Jordan Bowers, a senior, will make his debut at wide receiver. The coaching staff believes his speed and knack for explosive plays will add a new dimension to the offense.

To simulate game conditions, players wear shoulder pads during practice, allowing coaches to assess both physical resilience and mental toughness. The demanding drills have been met with a positive response, as the squad commits to giving 100 percent effort in every session.

Leadership on the field often comes from the older players, who set a standard of intensity and accountability. Their influence helps younger teammates embrace the physical and mental challenges of the program.

The team’s motivation is further fueled by a longstanding rivalry with teams from Schuylkill County. Upcoming matchups against Nativity BVM and Shenandoah Valley on August 22 will test the Maroons early, followed by a home game against Halifax on August 28.
