Mini Soccer Pitch Coming to North Charleston Sports Complex in 2026

U.S. Soccer Foundation partners with city to expand youth soccer access

A new mini soccer pitch is set to rise at the North Charleston Sports Complex in the fall of 2026, offering a dedicated venue for youth soccer programs and informal pick‑up games.

The project is the result of a partnership between the city of North Charleston and the U.S. Soccer Foundation. The municipality will fund the concrete slab with a $78,000 contribution, while the foundation will oversee the installation of lighting, netting and the provision of coaching training.

A community‑wide push for youth soccer

Through the foundation’s Soccer for Success program, participants will receive free instruction not only in soccer fundamentals but also in nutrition, education and social‑emotional skills, creating a holistic development experience.

City officials have long noted a shortage of soccer fields despite a growing appetite for the sport among local youngsters. Recreation department data shows the existing program as one of the largest offered by the department, underscoring the demand for additional spaces.

The upcoming pitch will be the first of its kind in the region, and it forms part of a national ambition to place 1,000 such mini fields in underserved communities by the end of 2026.

City Manager Alex Bard and Parks Director Kate Seagroves highlighted the initiative as a model for community‑centered recreation, emphasizing that the collaboration blends municipal investment with nonprofit expertise.

Beyond North Charleston, the model is being replicated in other locales, including Des Moines, Austin and Spartanburg, where similar partnerships aim to expand access to sport and youth development.
