The University of Minnesota women’s hockey program announced the verbal commitments of two of the state’s most coveted forwards, Mackenna Schlieman and Mia Sutch, who will join the Gophers for the 2028‑29 season.
Commitments Highlight Recruiting Momentum
Schlieman, a forward from Breck High School, capped a standout 2023‑24 campaign by leading her team to a fifth straight state championship while posting 55 points, including 25 goals and 30 assists.
Sutch, meanwhile, helped Centennial/Spring Lake Park reach the state title game before falling to Hill‑Murray, finishing the season with 60 points — 25 goals and 35 assists — across 31 appearances.
The arrivals coincide with a recent leadership change on the bench, as Greg May was hired as the new head coach in March 2024, bringing a fresh philosophy to a program that has long been a magnet for top talent.
Minnesota’s reputation as a breeding ground for elite women’s hockey is reinforced by its history of attracting standout players from across the state and beyond, a tradition that both Schlieman and Sutch say they are eager to continue.
Both prospects are already being discussed as potential candidates for the U.S. U‑18 national team, a prospect that could further elevate the program’s visibility on the international stage.
