The Minnesota State Mavericks will step onto the gridiron on August 27, 2026, for their first-ever season‑opener against Colorado Mesa. The matchup promises to be more than a simple opening game; it is a milestone that could set the tone for an entire season.
Entering the contest, the Mavericks carry the weight of a 13‑game winning streak in season‑openers and a 10‑4 record from the previous year. Ranked No. 3/5 in the preseason polls, the team is expected to defend its NSIC South Division title and continue its ascent in the national rankings.
Key Players to Watch
Sophomore linebacker Jefferson Mobry, the NSIC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, anchors a defense that averaged 393.0 yards per game in 2025. Complementing Mobry’s impact, junior running back Sam Backer earned the designation of Offensive Player to Watch after a breakout performance that helped the offense rank third in scoring within the conference.
Head coach Todd Hoffner, now in his 14th season at Minnesota State, will be looking to secure his 153rd career win. His program boasts a storied history, including seven NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearances in 2025, underscoring a tradition of excellence that fans hope to extend.
Colorado Mesa’s Outlook
Colorado Mesa, coming off a 6‑5 campaign in 2025, was selected fifth in the RMAC preseason poll. The team returns with a blend of experienced veterans and promising newcomers, aiming to upset the favored Mavericks and rewrite the narrative of the matchup.
Beyond the immediate result, a victory would give Minnesota State a 1‑0 start, extending its record for August wins and night‑game victories. Such a win would also mark the program’s 14th straight season‑opener triumph, reinforcing the Mavericks’ reputation as a powerhouse in the early weeks of the schedule.
The game represents more than just a win; it is a narrative of legacy, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. As the Mavericks take the field, they do so with the confidence of a team that has consistently turned expectations into achievements, and with the hope that this season will add another chapter to their storied history.
