A New Chapter in Development
The Minnesota Wild announced a multi-year affiliation with the ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen, a deal that will take effect at the start of the 2026-27 season. The agreement is designed to deepen player development pathways and broaden the Wild’s footprint in a market that has shown strong attendance trends.
Bill Guerin, the team’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, said the partnership reflects the organization’s commitment to nurturing talent at every level. “We’re excited to work with a club that shares our vision for player growth and community engagement,” he added.
Expanding the Development Network
The Icemen will serve as a resource for both the Minnesota Wild and the Iowa Wild, offering prospects a professional environment to hone their skills. Throughout the season, promising players can be assigned to Jacksonville for game-ready experience, complementing the AHL-based Iowa affiliate.
Joe Ernst, Vice President of Hockey Operations for Zawyer Sports & Entertainment, welcomed the arrangement, noting that the Icemen’s recent sell-out streak over the past four seasons underscores the club’s growing popularity and operational stability.
A Look at the Icemen’s Journey
Jacksonville’s franchise debuted in the 2017-18 season and has since been affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League. The team plays its home games at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, a 15,000-seat venue that opened in November 2003 and has become a focal point for local hockey fans.
Zawyer Sports & Entertainment, the ownership group behind the Icemen, highlighted the strategic fit of the new affiliation, emphasizing that the partnership aligns with their mission to deliver high-quality entertainment while supporting the development of future NHL talent.
The move also signals a broader ambition within the Wild organization to tap into emerging markets. By leveraging the Icemen’s strong fan base, the Wild hopes to increase visibility and foster a deeper connection with hockey enthusiasts across Florida and the Southeast.
