The Minnesota Wild revealed this week a multi-year affiliation with the Jacksonville Icemen of the ECHL, a partnership that will take effect at the start of the 2026-27 season.
A Shared Vision for Player Growth
The agreement is intended to serve as a developmental pipeline, giving prospects under contract with the Wild an opportunity to gain professional ice time while the Icemen act as a resource for both the Iowa Wild and the Minnesota Wild.
Bill Guerin, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Wild, said the affiliation reflects a commitment to nurturing talent and extending the organization’s footprint beyond the AHL.
Joe Ernst, Vice President of Hockey Operations for Zawyer Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Icemen, welcomed the collaboration, noting the Icemen’s proven track record of sell-out crowds and strong community engagement.
Looking Forward
The Icemen, who entered the league in 2017-18 and have previously partnered with the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans, call the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena home — a 15,000-seat venue that opened in November 2003 and has led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons.
While the Wild’s primary development affiliate remains the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League, the new ECHL relationship adds flexibility, allowing players to be assigned throughout the season to a market that consistently draws full houses.
The arrangement underscores a broader strategy within the Wild’s player development framework, one that leverages the Icemen’s robust fan base and operational expertise to create a seamless transition for emerging talent.
