The University of Minnesota women's hockey program entered a turbulent offseason after parting ways with longtime head coach Brad Frost. The decision opened the door for a wave of departures among the team's most promising recruits.
Among those who have moved on are Sydney Stoughton, who opted to join Penn State, and the defensive standout Megan Mossey, who chose to remain in the WCHA by committing to Wisconsin. Both players were expected to bolster the Gophers' attack and defensive depth for the upcoming season.
Megan Mossey brings a strong résumé, having represented the United States at the U‑18 level and earned All‑Star honors at the 2025 tournament. She posted 36 goals and 69 points in 46 games for the Etobicoke Dolphins and helped Team Atlantic capture a historic silver medal at Canada's U‑18 championships.
Annabelle Lovell, another key recruit, contributed 288 points over the past two seasons and holds a U‑18 World Championship gold and silver medal. Her offensive production has made her one of the most watched prospects in the league.
Rebuilding Through the Portal
The program has managed to retain only two forwards, Talla Hansen and Jaycee Chatleain, for the 2027‑28 campaign. To fill the gaps, Minnesota plans to turn to the transfer portal and has already secured elite signings that will arrive in the 2028‑29 academic year.
Head coach Callie McCullough and recruiting coordinator Mackenna Schlieman are expected to guide the roster reconstruction, while veteran Renee Lapointe and emerging talents such as Mia Sutch and Ryann Chimera add depth to the squad.
