Mishawaka’s Normain Park has undergone a transformative renovation that now houses the Pfeil Miracle Field, a baseball diamond built specifically for players with disabilities.
The revamped space goes beyond the diamond, incorporating accessible equipment, a sensory garden and a series of interactive games designed to engage children of all abilities.
The ambitious project, which carried a price tag exceeding $4 million, was made possible through the combined efforts of community donors and local leadership.
Dick Pfeil, a longtime advocate for inclusive recreation, led the initiative, while Mayor Dave Wood lent his full support, helping to rally volunteers and secure funding.
Looking Ahead
A newly formed nonprofit now oversees the park’s operations, seeking volunteers to serve as “buddies” who assist players on the field and to contribute to ongoing fundraising.
Mayor Wood has emphasized that the park’s mission will endure, promising continued benefits for families and children throughout the region.
Plans are already underway to add a basketball court, a storybook walk and a tot lot, expanding the park’s inclusive amenities and ensuring that the spirit of community-driven recreation continues to grow.
