Mississippi State’s baseball program has reason to celebrate after being placed 13th in the final 2026 USA TODAY Coaches Poll, marking the highest finish for the Bulldogs since their 2021 national championship.
The ranking reflects a season that saw the Bulldogs surge through a competitive schedule, earning them a spot among the nation’s elite and a berth in the NCAA Tournament super regional.
A season of promise
Coach Brian O'Connor, in his first year at the helm, guided the team to a dramatic run that included leading both games in the eighth inning before ultimately falling to Georgia.
The super regional, held in Athens, Georgia, pitted the Bulldogs against the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia, who entered the series as the No. 3 team in the Coaches Poll.
Despite taking early leads, Mississippi State could not hold the advantage, dropping the series in two games and ending their national title hopes.
Georgia’s run did not stop there; the Bulldogs advanced to the College World Series semifinals before being edged out by Oklahoma, who captured the championship.
The final poll also highlighted the depth of the field, with the top eight teams all advancing to the College World Series and Auburn, UCLA, Georgia Tech and Kansas occupying the 9th through 12th slots.
Mississippi State’s 14th placement in the D1Baseball poll further underscores the program’s resurgence, while the Bulldogs look to build on this momentum in the coming seasons.
