Mississippi State Baseball Prepares for 2027 Overhaul

Roster turnover, key departures and new additions shape the Bulldogs' outlook

A Transformative Offseason

Mississippi State University is bracing for a major reshaping of its baseball roster as the 2027 season approaches, with the program set to lose the bulk of its starting position players from the previous year. Among those departures is Ace Reese, a standout who is projected as a potential first‑round pick in the upcoming MLB draft, joining a list of players whose eligibility has expired.

The pitching staff, however, returns intact, featuring starters Tomas Valincius, Ryan McPherson and Duke Stone, who will anchor the rotation. At the same time, the team has secured transfer Brady Christman from Georgia Southern and is actively pursuing additional position players through the transfer portal to fill the void left by the departing lineup.

The need for reliable relief arms, especially a proven closer, has become a focal point after the bullpen struggled in 2026; redshirt freshman William Kirk’s season‑ending knee injury opened a vacancy that the staff hopes to plug with emerging arms such as Aidan Teel and Maddox Webb. The coaching staff, including Brian O'Connor, Chone James and Rocco Maniscalco, is expected to guide the transition while maintaining continuity on the mound.

Adding to the optimism, the incoming recruiting class has been ranked No. 6 nationally by Perfect Game and includes six prospects who appear inside MLB.com’s top 200 draft rankings. This haul, overseen by recruiting coordinator Peter Merhson, brings names such as Jacob Parker, Kevin Milewski, Ryder Woodson, Aidan Teel and others into the mix as the Bulldogs look to rebuild around a core that also features returning shortstop and catcher stability.
