Summer Showcase
Mississippi State’s baseball program continues to serve as a proving ground for elite talent, with a record 29 players scattered across summer collegiate leagues this year. The Bulldogs’ presence across the Cape Cod Baseball League, the New England College Baseball League, the Alaska Baseball League and even international competition underscores the program’s national reach.
Among the standouts, pitcher Tomas Valincius and right‑hander Ryan McPherson earned spots on the USA Collegiate National Team, traveling to Taiwan to compete in a series that highlighted their dominance. Valincius logged three scoreless appearances, surrendering just 12 hits over 8 ⅓ innings while striking out 12 batters, a performance that left opposing hitters swinging at air. Ryan McPherson complemented the effort with a shutout outing, and reliever Jack Bauer added three perfect innings, preserving the team’s flawless record.
The duo’s success was mirrored by a cadre of relievers who turned heads in the Cape Cod League. Jack Gleason posted a 1.56 ERA across six games, fanning 13 opponents in 17 ⅓ innings, while Zach Russell combined a 1.98 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 13 ⅓ frames. Both pitchers kept their ERAs under two, a rarity that bodes well for the upcoming 2027 season.
Position players also made their mark. Dax Hardcastle batted .305 with five home runs and 21 runs scored in 31 games, while Peyton Firgens added a .260 average and 24 RBIs in the Northwoods League. Josiah Overbeek contributed a .239 average with seven RBIs and five runs in 15 games, and Harlin Hovater, despite a .192 average, hit three home runs and scored 16 runs in 37 appearances.
Even as some players faced challenges, the overall statistical snapshot remained encouraging. Jacob Parker’s trial performance yielded a modest .179 average and a single homer, yet his 15 strikeouts hinted at untapped potential. Brady Christman, who appeared in 17 games, posted a .183 average and eight RBIs, illustrating the depth of competition for roster spots.
The breadth of league participation — from the Cape Cod circuit to the Alaska Baseball League — provides a crucible where prospects can test themselves against varied competition. As the Bulldogs gear up for the 2027 campaign, the summer’s data offers a clear narrative: a blend of elite arms, reliable middle‑relief, and emerging bats that could reshape the team’s identity.
