Fall Baseball Schedule and Outlook
Mississippi State’s fall baseball schedule will take fans to the Gulf Coast this October, with two games slated in Biloxi. The Bulldogs open against Auburn on October 9 at 6 p.m., followed by a matchup with Southern Miss on October 10 at 2 p.m. The contests are timed to coincide with the football team’s weekly break, giving supporters a chance to enjoy college baseball while the gridiron rests.
The games come on the heels of a breakthrough 2023 season for the program. Under head coach Brian O'Connor, who was hired the previous offseason, the Bulldogs secured a postseason berth and captured a Super Regional victory, marking the school’s first Super Regional win in program history. Although they fell short in the Super Regional against Georgia, the experience has set high expectations for the coming year.
Auburn arrives as a formidable opponent. The Tigers, guided by head coach Butch Thompson, have established themselves as a consistent power in the SEC, having taken the series from Mississippi State in the previous season. Southern Miss, meanwhile, proved its mettle by splitting the 2023 matchup with State, dropping a 7‑6 decision in Hattiesburg before routing the Bulldogs 12‑0 in Starkville. Both teams bring strong pitching staffs and seasoned lineups that promise competitive contests.
Looking further ahead, Mississippi State is slated to compete in the 2027 Amegy Bank College Baseball Series, a showcase event that will feature national contenders such as UCLA, Ole Miss, Dallas Baptist, Penn State, and Wake Forest. UCLA entered the 2023 season as the nation’s top‑ranked team, while Wake Forest and Dallas Baptist have also demonstrated deep tournament pedigrees. The series will test the Bulldogs against elite competition and could shape their trajectory toward future national contention.
For fans, the Biloxi games offer more than just baseball; they represent a unique overlap of sports calendars that maximizes attendance and community engagement. By leveraging the football team’s off weekend, the university hopes to boost ticket sales and create a festive atmosphere that blends the excitement of two of its flagship sports.
