Two football players were caught up in a gambling scandal that unfolded in February, when they placed wagers on professional events through the sports‑betting platform Kalshi.
One athlete staked a $50 bet on the Super Bowl contest between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, only to see his stake evaporate as the game concluded.
The second player opted for the NBA All‑Star Game and its three‑point contest, a wager that turned profitable when he correctly predicted Damian Lillard’s performance, netting a $64 win.
Both athletes later confessed to the violations during meetings with the university’s compliance office, where they were subjected to mandatory rules education rather than harsher sanctions.
Co‑Signing and Improper Meals
In a separate matter, an assistant coach became entangled in a housing violation after co‑signing an apartment lease for an international student, a practice the NCAA flags as impermissible when it circumvents eligibility constraints.
The track and field team also incurred penalties for providing two meals to the girlfriend of a prospective recruit during an official visit, a breach that triggered a one‑week recruiting ban and rendered the prospect ineligible until the $55.64 expense was repaid.
The SEC issued a warning to the program, emphasizing that further infractions — particularly repeat offenses involving improper meals to recruits’ guests — could result in more severe punishments.
