Missouri State University–West Plains Elevates Max Bates to Full‑Time Assistant Baseball Coach

Former standout pitcher transitions to a permanent role, bringing a strong pitching background and academic credentials to the program

A New Chapter for Grizzly Baseball

Missouri State University–West Plains announced the promotion of Max Bates to full‑time assistant baseball coach, a move that cements his place on the program’s coaching staff.

Bates first arrived in June 2025 as a volunteer assistant, quickly proving his value to the Grizzlies. A native of Columbia, Missouri, he brings a pitching pedigree that began at Hickman High School, where he emerged as a standout arm.

His collegiate career spanned North Arkansas College and Blue Mountain Christian University, where he earned NJCAA All‑America honors after the 2022 season and posted a 2.94 earned run average in 2023. That season he also led his team with 78 ⅓ innings pitched, showcasing durability and command.

Beyond the mound, Bates holds an associate degree from North Arkansas College and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Blue Mountain Christian University. His academic excellence was recognized by a spot on the Southern States Athletic Conference All‑Academic Team.

In his new full‑time capacity, Bates will oversee the pitching staff while also contributing to recruiting efforts and overall player development. His blend of on‑field experience and scholarly background aligns with the university’s commitment to holistic athlete growth.
