Mitch McLemore, a 60‑year‑old former Texas high school football coach, died on March 12, 2025 after a prolonged battle with Stage 4 esophageal cancer, leaving behind a legacy that spanned more than three decades across the heart of West Texas.
Early Life and Education
Born in Olney, Texas, he grew up in Stamford, the son of a high school football coach, and excelled at Archer City High School before earning a bachelor's degree in education from Midwestern State University in 1989.
A Coaching Journey Across West Texas
McLemore began his career in the early 1990s at Bryson, later moving to Munday and Archer City before serving as an assistant at Big Spring, Knox City and Stamford. He was the defensive coordinator on Stamford’s back‑to‑back UIL state championship teams in 2012 and 2013. After head‑coaching stints at Junction, Big Spring (2017‑2018) and Petrolia (2019‑2020), he returned to Haskell as head coach from 2021 to 2024, guiding the team to three playoff appearances with a 17‑25 record.
The Final Chapter
Diagnosed with Stage 4 esophageal cancer in December 2021, McLemore retired from Haskell ISD in March 2025 with a career record of 48‑72. Colleagues and former players have paid tribute to his dedication, mentorship and the lasting impact he had on the communities he served.
