A summer baseball experiment in the heartland
Mitchell, South Dakota, is weighing a move that could bring the Gem City Bison, a collegiate summer baseball franchise, from Laramie, Wyoming, to its own community for the 2027 season.
The Independence League Baseball Association, which launched in 2022 with ten teams across the Northern Plains, will stage an exhibition contest on July 11 between the Bison and the Oahe Zap to measure fan interest in the potential relocation.
Early ticket sales indicate a modest but tangible appetite, with between 350 and 400 seats already reserved for the one‑off game, a figure that league officials say underscores the viability of expanding into new markets.
The league, now comprising clubs in Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming, has steadily grown since its inception, adding franchises such as the Casper Spuds, Oahe Zap and Spearfish Sasquatch for the 2026 campaign.
League executives have said they are actively courting additional teams, venues and operators, positioning the organization for a broader footprint that could see Mitchell become a permanent home if the current trial proves successful.
Should the relocation be approved, the Bison would join the ranks of South Dakota’s longest‑running Independence League franchise, the Oahe Zap, which has called Pierre home since joining in 2023.
