How the System Works
ABS relies on a network of Hawk‑Eye cameras positioned around the stadium to track the ball’s trajectory in three dimensions. The data feeds a personalized strike zone for each batter, defined by a two‑dimensional box that adjusts to the hitter’s height. Although a three‑dimensional version was trialed, players overwhelmingly preferred the simpler two‑dimensional approach.
The system’s strike zone is not static; it recalibrates for each batter, ensuring that the target area reflects individual stance and swing characteristics. This dynamic calibration is intended to improve accuracy while preserving the spirit of the game.
Reactions and Strategy
Early feedback from players, coaches and fans has been mixed but generally positive. The added drama of visible challenges has heightened engagement, while the statistic that umpires get roughly half of challenged calls right has sparked discussion about the system’s reliability. Some athletes, including veterans like Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, have voiced concerns about the two‑dimensional zone, yet many acknowledge the technology’s potential to reduce outright errors.
MLB officials have indicated that expanding ABS to cover every pitch is not currently on the agenda.
