Molly Engstrom Joins PWHL Detroit
The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced Tuesday that Molly Engstrom will serve as an assistant coach for the Detroit franchise, slated to begin play in the 2026‑27 season. The move pairs the two‑time Olympic medalist with head coach Josh Sciba, whose own vision for the team emphasizes competitiveness and community engagement.
Engstrom’s appointment comes after a distinguished playing career that yielded Olympic silver in 2010 and bronze in 2006, along with six medals across the IIHF Women’s World Championships. Her résumé also includes CWHL titles in 2008 and 2013 and an SDHL championship in 2017, underscoring a legacy of success on the international stage.
Transitioning to the bench, Engstrom most recently led the University of Maine women’s ice hockey program as head coach. In her first season, she guided the Black Bears to a record‑setting power play and earned runner‑up honors for Hockey East Coach of the Year. Prior to that, she spent three years at St. Cloud State and contributed to USA Hockey’s U22 women’s collegiate program as an assistant coach in 2024.
Her coaching portfolio expands further with a stint directing Team USA’s Collegiate U22 squad in 2025, where she helped develop the next generation of talent. Engstrom’s deep familiarity with elite‑level competition is expected to accelerate the professional growth of Detroit’s roster and reinforce the team’s developmental pipeline.
Head coach Josh Sciba highlighted Engstrom’s blend of championship experience and player‑centric coaching philosophy as a perfect complement to the franchise’s core values. “Molly’s track record of excellence and her ability to connect with athletes will be instrumental as we build a competitive and sustainable team,” Sciba said in a statement.
The hiring marks a significant milestone for PWHL Detroit, which is preparing for its inaugural season amid growing interest in women’s professional hockey. Engstrom’s addition signals the league’s commitment to assembling coaching staffs that reflect the sport’s global talent pool and competitive spirit.
