Monmouth University Honors Coach Kevin Callahan with Naming of Kevin Callahan Field

A ceremony celebrating three decades of coaching excellence precedes the Hawks' home opener against Towson on October 3.

Monmouth University held a formal naming ceremony on September 8 to christen its football stadium’s main field as Kevin Callahan Field, honoring the coach whose three‑decade tenure transformed the program from a modest start into one of the premier FCS teams.

A Legacy Cemented in Stone

Over 33 seasons, Kevin Callahan steered the Hawks to a record of 197 wins, the most among active head coaches at the time of his retirement, and captured seven conference championships. His teams reached the FCS Playoffs three times, underscoring a consistency that helped elevate Monmouth from a regional program to a national contender.

The ceremony featured remarks from Athletics Director Jennifer Sansevero, who described Callahan as a pillar whose name is synonymous with Monmouth, as well as alumni Don Burnaford ’72, current head coach Jeff Gallo, President Patrick F. Leahy, and Callahan’s daughter Julia. The event also included a coin toss by Callahan for the Hawks’ home opener against Sacred Heart, a 31‑24 victory, and the presentation of an honorary bronze football by CAA Commissioner Joe D'Antonio.

Looking Ahead

A permanent relief panel, commissioned by the Athletics Department, will be installed this fall to visually commemorate Callahan’s impact, while the newly named field at Kessler Stadium will host Towson on October 3, kickoff at 1 p.m. The upcoming game offers a fresh chapter for the program, with the Hawks poised to carry forward the legacy of a coach whose vision continues to shape the future of Monmouth football.
