A Coach Who Redefined Monmouth Football
Monmouth University will formally christen the playing surface at Kessler Stadium as ‘Kevin Callahan Field’ on September 5, 2026, when the Hawks open their season against Sacred Heart.
The ceremony caps a storied 33‑year tenure in which Callahan stood as the program’s sole head coach from its inaugural 1993 campaign through the 2025 season, shepherding the team from a modest start‑up to a nationally recognized Football Championship Subdivision powerhouse.
Under his guidance the Hawks amassed 197 victories, captured seven conference titles and earned five Coach of the Year honors, a record that placed him atop the list of active Division I head coaches at the time of his retirement.
Current head coach Jeff Gallo, who succeeded Callahan in December 2025, will lead the team onto the newly designated field, marking the first chapter of a new era while paying tribute to the foundation laid by his predecessor.
University President Patrick F. Leahy praised Callahan’s impact, noting that ‘the imprint of his leadership extends far beyond the gridiron, shaping the character of countless student‑athletes who now carry his legacy into the wider world.’
Among the alumni who have credited Callahan for their development are NFL veterans Miles Austin and Chris Hogan, exemplifying the coach’s ability to produce talent that competes at the highest levels of professional football.
