A Sudden End to an Interim Tenure
South Carolina announced that Monte Lee will not continue as the head coach of its baseball program, ending a brief interim tenure that began after Paul Mainieri’s dismissal in March.
Lee, who previously guided Clemson and the College of Charleston, stepped into the role when the Gamecocks were 12‑11 and had dropped four straight games in SEC play.
The 2026 campaign concluded with a 22‑35 finish, marking the most losses ever recorded by the university’s baseball team and prompting the administration to seek a new direction.
University officials said the decision reflects a desire to pursue a different direction for the program, citing the need for a fresh approach moving forward.
The move comes as the athletic department evaluates the future of the baseball program, with an eye toward restoring competitiveness in the SEC and beyond.
