A Familiar Face Returns to Charleston
Monte Lee, a veteran strategist who has spent his entire coaching career in South Carolina, is poised to join the College of Charleston as an assistant head coach. His appointment comes after a whirlwind few years that saw him cycle through roles at Clemson, the University of South Carolina, and intermittent interim leadership at the Gamecocks.
Lee’s ties to Charleston run deep. A 2000 graduate of the college, he starred as an outfielder from 1996 to 1999 before stepping into the dugout. From 2009 to 2015 he guided the Cougars to four NCAA Tournament appearances, establishing a winning culture that still influences the program today.
From Clemson to Carolina and Back Again
After leaving Charleston, Lee took the helm at Clemson, where he led the Tigers to four consecutive NCAA Regionals before being dismissed in 2022 following two missed Tournaments. He returned to South Carolina in 2023 as associate head coach under Mark Kingston, briefly serving as interim head coach when Kingston was fired in 2024 and again in 2026 after Paul Mainieri’s departure. The 2026 season ended with a 10‑24 record, leading to Lee’s exit from the Gamecocks staff.
The University of South Carolina subsequently appointed Kevin Schnall as its new head coach, while Chad Holbrook continues to lead the College of Charleston. The Cougars, fresh off a 37‑22 campaign, are aiming for their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2015, a goal that Lee’s experience could help achieve.
Lee’s return is being hailed as a strategic move to blend championship pedigree with the program’s current trajectory. His deep roots in the state, combined with a résumé that includes stints at three of South Carolina’s major collegiate programs, position him as a key figure in the next chapter of Charleston baseball.
