Monte Lee Returns to College of Charleston as Assistant Head Coach

A seasoned coach aims to rebuild the Cougars' program and chase championships

A Familiar Face Returns

Monte Lee is back at the College of Charleston, taking on the role of assistant head coach for the 2027 baseball season. His return follows a distinguished tenure that began in 2009, when he led the Cougars to a 276‑145 record over seven years and guided the program to a Lubbock Super Regional appearance in 2014.

Lee’s coaching journey has taken him to Clemson University, where he captured an ACC regular‑season title in his debut year, and to the University of South Carolina, where he helped the Gamecocks reach NCAA Super Regionals in 2023 and 2024. Across those stops he mentored nine All‑Americans, including at least one each season, and helped develop multiple conference players of the year.

From Player to Coach

Before his coaching career, Lee was a standout outfielder for the Cougars from 1996 to 1999, earning a place on the inaugural Wall of Fame at Patriots Point in 2004. That same year the St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in the 39th round, making him the first position player ever selected by a major‑league team in Cougar history.

His deep connection to Charleston extends beyond the diamond. Lee’s leadership aims to recruit elite talent, elevate the program’s national profile, and ultimately contend for championships, a vision he shares with longtime colleague Chad Holbrook, who also joins the staff for the upcoming season.
