A Long‑Awaited Breakthrough
Monterey Bay FC finally broke a winless streak that had stretched far beyond the 2025 season, defeating Birmingham Legion FC 2‑0 at Cardinale Stadium on Saturday. The result marks the Union’s first three points of the campaign and ends a drought that had left fans yearning for a turnaround.
Taking charge of the team just four weeks ago, new head coach Alex Covelo introduced a fresh tactical approach that emphasized possession and quick transitions. Under his guidance, the Union dictated the tempo, holding the ball for 56 percent of the match and completing 501 passes, nearly a hundred more than their opponents.
The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute when midfielder Riley Bidois slipped a well‑timed shot past the Birmingham keeper. Seven minutes later, Eduardo Blancas sealed the outcome with a second goal, providing a comfortable cushion for the Union.
Discipline and Determination
Despite the comfortable scoreline, the Union’s discipline left much to be desired. The team accumulated 24 fouls, compared with 15 by Birmingham, and was forced to rely on veteran goalkeeper Fernando Delgado, who made eight saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Next Challenge
Loudoun United’s recent form makes them a formidable opponent, but the Union will look to carry the confidence from their recent performance into the next fixture.
