A New Era for Montgomery Catholic Flag Football
Montgomery Catholic's flag football squad is set to take the field on August 20 in the inaugural televised AHSAA Kickoff Classic, where they will meet the nation's top-ranked team from Central-Phenix City. The matchup marks the first time a Montgomery Catholic team has appeared on live television, underscoring the rapid rise of the program.
Seniors Frances Rogers and Avery Sadler, who have been part of the Knights' flag football family since the program's inception, will lead the offense. Both players helped the team reach the state championship game in 2024, and their experience gives the squad a competitive edge as they prepare for the highly anticipated showdown.
Coach Whitney Toole, who has guided the Knights to three state championship games, expressed pride in the team's progress. "We've built a culture of excellence," Toole said. "Seeing our players earn Division I opportunities, like former teammate Anna Russo, validates the work we've done and fuels our ambition for the future."
Last season, the Knights came within a touchdown of halting Central-Phenix City's winning streak in their season opener, a near‑miss that added extra intrigue to this year's classic. The close contest highlighted the growing competitiveness of flag football in Alabama and set the stage for a rematch that fans are eager to watch.
Beyond this single game, Toole hopes the Kickoff Classic will become a recurring event that showcases Montgomery Catholic and other local programs on a larger stage. "This is just the beginning," she said, envisioning a future where flag football enjoys the same spotlight as traditional sports.
