Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando Hospitalized After Heart Attack

The Democratic nominee recovers at home while supporters rally around his campaign schedule

Will Jawando, the 43‑year‑old Democratic nominee for Montgomery County executive and longtime county council member, was rushed to a hospital in Washington, D.C., after suffering a heart attack during a casual pickup basketball game.

Health Crisis on the Court

Medical staff at The George Washington University Hospital inserted a stent to treat the blockage, and doctors say he is on the mend and expected to be discharged later this week.

His physician has advised Jawando to limit his office activities for several weeks, allowing him to focus on recovery at home with his wife Michele and their children.

Despite the health setback, Jawando’s campaign calendar remains largely intact; a Thursday appearance is slated at Lone Oak Farm Brewing Co. in Olney, with the possibility of joining the event via Zoom if he is unable to attend in person.

The County Council’s next meeting on September 15 may also see Jawando participating remotely, according to his chief of staff Dave Kunes, who anticipates the councilmember will address the media shortly after his discharge, likely on Wednesday or Thursday.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, who has publicly endorsed Jawando, expressed concern for his well‑being and wished him a swift recovery, while Comptroller Brooke Lierman, a close friend and fellow public servant, offered heartfelt wishes, describing Jawando as a dedicated husband, father and servant of the community.

Jawando’s family has thanked the quick response of friends, medical professionals and community members, underscoring the strong support network surrounding the candidate during this challenging time.
