Moorhead High School’s football program is set to welcome a new weapon on the offensive side of the ball. Drew Kessel, a junior tight end who previously starred at Fargo South, announced his transfer to Moorhead earlier this week, citing personal reasons and a desire to be closer to friends as key factors in his decision.
A New Face in the Spuds' Attack
Kessel arrives with a proven track record of production. Last season he recorded 635 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 38 catches, earning second‑team all‑state honors. His size, route running and ability to create mismatches make him a natural fit for a Spuds offense that already boasts five Division I commits.
The Spuds finished the previous campaign with an 8‑5 record and advanced to the Prep Bowl championship, where they fell to Edina 42‑35. The team’s offense was a major driver of that success, throwing for 3,236 yards and rushing for nearly 1,700 yards. With the addition of Kessel, the coaching staff believes the unit can maintain its momentum.
Defensive Questions Remain
While the offense looks poised, the defense will need to fill several gaps. The Spuds lost their top three defensive linemen to graduation, but returning players such as Isaac Perry, Riley Paquin and Nathan Steinert are expected to step into larger roles. Defensive back Etina Monono and linebacker Taye Reich will also provide continuity.
Key departures on the defensive line include Aiden Struck and Drew Berneking, who anchored the front last year. The team will rely on a mix of experienced returners and emerging talent to keep opponents in check.
Conference Landscape
The upcoming season will feature a reshaped set of rivals. Edina will be without running back Chase Bjorgaard and quarterback Mason West, while Maple Grove must replace its quarterback and running back. Minnetonka retains its quarterback but will look to fill the void left by running back Caleb Francois. St. Michael‑Albertville will field a new quarterback, and Eden Prairie will again showcase a potent 1‑2 running back core with Owen Konrad and Windlan Hall.
The Spuds will meet these teams on the field, hoping that Kessel’s arrival, combined with a solid returning core, can translate into a stronger defensive showing and a deeper playoff run.
