The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced that Mount Carmel High School’s football program will be placed on probation for the 2026 season after the team practiced in full protective equipment before the association’s mandated sixth day of practice.
As a consequence, head coach Jordan Lynch received a two‑practice suspension, removing him from the sidelines for the August 17 and 18 sessions that precede the team’s season opener.
Self‑reported sanctions accepted
Mount Carmel voluntarily disclosed the infraction to the IHSA and proposed the penalties, which the association accepted without modification. The move reflects a growing emphasis on transparency and compliance within high school athletics.
The team enters the new season ranked No. 24 in the USA TODAY Sports preseason Super 25 national poll and carries a 19‑game win streak that began in October 2024, a testament to the program’s sustained excellence under Lynch’s leadership.
Lynch, a Heisman Trophy finalist and graduate of Mount Carmel, has guided the school to four consecutive state titles in eight seasons, compiling an 89‑12 record that places him among the most successful coaches in recent Illinois history.
The upcoming opener against East St. Louis will test the team’s depth and resilience as they navigate the probationary period without their head coach on the practice field.
The IHSA’s decision to accept the school’s self‑imposed sanctions underscores a collaborative approach to enforcement, aiming to balance rule adherence with the broader goals of high school sports development.
