West Virginia University opened its fall training camp this week in Morgantown, marking the first step toward the 2026 season. The Mountaineers are using the camp to install new schemes and evaluate the talent that will shape the upcoming schedule.
A Revamped Coaching Staff
Coach Rich Rodriguez, now in his second year after a 4‑8 record, emphasized the work being done to reverse last season’s shortcomings. He highlighted the addition of veteran offensive line coach Rick Trickett, a 78‑year‑old who previously helped the program, as a key piece of the puzzle.
The quarterback position will be a focal point of the competition. Sophomore Scotty Fox Jr., who set a school record with 301 yards as a true freshman, is back and will battle Oklahoma transfer Michael Hawkins Jr., a dual‑threat signal‑caller, for the starting role.
Beyond the quarterback spot, the roster welcomes several high‑impact additions. Running back Cam Cook, who posted 1,659 yards at Jacksonville State last year, joins the backfield, while four‑star true freshman Amari Latimer adds depth at multiple positions.
Defensively, coordinator Zac Alley expects new portal acquisitions to make an immediate impact. Among them is Geimere Latimer II from Wisconsin, who will compete for minutes at nickel safety, a move Alley believes will shore up the secondary.
The 2026 slate begins on Sept. 5 against Coastal Carolina and will be televised on TNT, TruTV and HBO Max. The home schedule includes matchups with UT‑Martin, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Cincinnati, Kansas and Houston, promising a demanding but exciting season for the Mountaineers.
