Mourinho’s Turbulent Spell at Real Madrid
José Mourinho, who managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, repeatedly described his squad as spoiled and mentally fragile, accusing several players of demanding excessive rest, delaying training and preferring nightlife over team commitments.
During his three‑year stay the club captured La Liga and the Copa del Rey, yet the Portuguese coach said the atmosphere turned sour as stars began to dictate terms, a situation that culminated in a public rift with captain Iker Casillas.
Mourinho claimed that Casillas, while still a Real Madrid player, had encouraged Barcelona teammates during international breaks, a move he likened to a ‘war’ between the clubs, underscoring the heightened rivalry that affected the dressing room.
The Portuguese tactician revealed that he had been ready to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, but ultimately chose Chelsea because he felt a stronger emotional bond with the London club, a decision driven more by a desire to be loved than by pure sporting ambition.
His departure was also influenced by strained relations with both players and the press, with the manager noting that the constant conflict made it impossible to continue, leading him to move on before the end of his contract.
