A Milestone at Home
Murray State’s baseball program is set to host the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament for the first time since it entered the league in 2022, turning the familiar confines of Johnny Reagan Field at Taylor Family Park into a stage for a historic showdown.
Opening Matchup
Seeded third, the Racers will open against Illinois State at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, a team they swept earlier this season, with senior pitcher Nic Schutte slated to take the mound for the opening game.
Schutte arrives after a career‑high 7.1 innings of shutout work against the Redbirds, striking out 11 while walking just one, while reliever Jacob Hustedde followed with 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball, fanning four and allowing a single hit.
Format and Broadcast
The tournament adopts a double‑elimination format, with UIC and Indiana State earning first‑round byes, and every contest will be streamed live on ESPN+, giving fans nationwide access to the action.
Head coach Dan Skirka has described the field as ‘highly competitive from top to bottom,’ noting that the Racers’ recent run to the College World Series adds a layer of confidence as they chase back‑to‑back MVC titles.
At the plate, Murray State has posted a team batting average of .293, driven by Connor Chisolm’s .493 performance against the five tournament opponents, underscoring a balanced attack that could prove decisive.
