Summer Preparations Underway for Murray State Racers
Murray State's football program is deep into its summer regimen as the 2026‑2027 season looms on the horizon. With roughly 115 athletes gathered in June, the team is concentrating on gaining size, speed and overall conditioning before shifting to more sport‑specific work in July.
Head coach Jody Wright has framed the period as a chance to lay a solid foundation for the squad. He stresses that the returning freshmen from last year’s roster will provide continuity and experience, allowing the Racers to hit the weight room harder and run more intense programs without the constraints of full‑contact practice.
Building Community Through a Youth Camp
The summer schedule also includes a community‑focused element: a youth camp that invites local kids to learn basic fundamentals and interact with the players. Wright says the camp is as much about growing the program’s presence in the area as it is about giving back.
Looking Ahead to the August Opener
As the calendar turns to July, the focus will transition from general athleticism to explosive movement drills and football‑specific skill work. While pads remain scarce and full contact is limited, the team can still run 7‑on‑7 scenarios and practice formation recognition, setting the stage for a smoother transition when the season begins.
The first test will come on August 27, when Murray State hosts Eastern Illinois for the season‑opening game. The matchup marks the Racers’ debut under Wright’s renewed emphasis on discipline and preparation, and it will be a litmus test for the progress made during the summer.
